Before every ride, our coaches run through a safety checklist with riders and parents. Whether you're new to mountain biking or a seasoned family, these tips will help keep everyone safe on Flagstaff's trails.
1. Gear Up Properly
- Always wear a properly fitted helmet — no exceptions
- Gloves protect hands during falls and improve grip
- Closed-toe shoes with stiff soles are essential
- Bring layers — Flagstaff weather changes quickly at 7,000 feet
2. Pre-Ride Bike Check
Teach your rider the "ABC Quick Check" before every ride:
- Air — tires inflated to recommended pressure
- Brakes — squeeze levers, check pad contact
- Chain — lubricated and shifting smoothly
- Quick releases — wheels and seat secured
3. Trail Etiquette
- Yield to uphill riders and hikers
- Stay on designated trails — don't cut switchbacks
- Announce yourself when passing: "On your left!"
- Pack out everything you pack in
4. Know Before You Go
Check trail conditions, weather forecasts, and fire restrictions before heading out. Carry water (at least one liter per hour of riding), a basic first aid kit, and a charged phone. Let someone know your planned route and return time.
5. Ride Within Your Limits
Progressive skill building is at the heart of our coaching philosophy. Encourage your rider to walk sections they're not ready for — there's no shame in scouting a feature before committing. Confidence comes from repetition, not recklessness.
